She lets the youth of her church watch an hour of her color television in exchange for some Bible study time. Emma wields her faith almost like a weapon. Religion plays an interesting role in Sparkle. And we feel Omari Hardwick's lovesick frustration as Levi, who tries to woo Sister despite his modest means. Derek Luke is earnest, believable, and enjoyable to watch. The male characters fare much better both in how they're written and acted. Her acting is decent, and her performance of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" late in the film is riveting. While it's good and a bit haunting to see Houston here, she seems tired throughout the film. Sumpter, with the least screen time, is the best of the three. At times she seems up to the task, but in other key moments she's emotionless and a little lost. Jordin Sparks is not going to pull a Jennifer Hudson with this performance (Hudson won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2007's Dreamgirls). The singing and performances are great, the acting less so. Scorned by men (see?!) and the music industry, she hides her angst and fear behind her fervent religious practice. How these three grew up in the same family is rather remarkable (read: implausible). Sparkle is the Church Mouse, who wants to please and doesn't have the ambition to match her talent. Dee is the Brain, the strong, goal-oriented, verbal brawn of the bunch. Sister is the Sexpot, who keeps making stupid choices in men to try to attain the lavish lifestyle she wants. And that more involves anything but following in her footsteps into the music industry.īut Sparkle has a dream. Houston plays the sisters' mom, Emma, a washed-up singer turned good church-going woman who wants more for her three daughters. Deborah Martin Chase, who produced this new version, had been working with Whitney Houston ( Sparkle executive producer and a co-star here) for over a decade to remake the film, and, sadly, it wound up being Houston's final project. The original 1976 movie was set in 1950s Harlem and starred Irene Cara as Sparkle and Philip Michael Thomas as her boyfriend/manager Stix. In fact, this isn't the first time Sparkle has hit the big screen. But also the stereotyped characters and well-worn plotlines. The great costuming and late-60s nightclub vibe. So much of what's right and wrong with Sparkle is packed in those opening scenes. Five minutes later the sisters are on a bus home, hoping to sneak in before their overprotective mom wakes up and realizes they've been gone. Sister does take the stage and belt out a vampy song, much to the delight of the men in the audience and the joy of her sister, Sparkle, who wrote it (well, thanks to Curtis Mayfield). One, dressed in a sexy silver dress, is getting ready to perform, and the other, dressed in a demure sweater and skirt, is begging her not to back out. It's 1968 Detroit, and we open with two young African American women in a nightclub. (Oh c'mon, as if that's any kind of spoiler). So we watch the familiar unraveling, shaking our heads at the screen over all the lost potential, all the unnecessary carnage. ![]() Why, why, why do women in musical girl groups ever try to find love? Haven't they seen the other movies? Don't they know that men will be their downfall? The Exbor Studios had its beginning as the Lobmeyr workshop in Kamenicky Senov it moved to Novy Bor and was incorporated into Egermann-Exbor in 1962. The Moser firm in Karlovy Vary produces innumerable designs dating back to 1900 and occasionally even earlier. Today it is being produced by Ornela under the Desna label. The glassware produced by Heinrich Hoffmann and Henry Schlevogt in the 1930s is still immensely popular. Museums and collectors often use his work as substitutes for vintage examples that cannot otherwise be obtained. He faithfully copies the original with only the slightest change to set his work apart. Hortensky (of Novy Bor and Kamenicky Senov) has worked closely with the Glass Museum in Novy Bor and others to produce replicas of Biedermeier and Rococo beakers. One of the most accomplished painters in the Czech Republic is JiYi Hortensky. Sometimes replicas occur as the whim of one particular person to challenge the past, but it also happens that a particular style will come back into fashion after 75 or 100 years: neo-classicism, neo-rococo and Second Biedermeier are all fashions that have had a successful revival. There can be no doubt that the Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass made by Harrach and Loetz will serve as models for glass makers for many years to come. The swartzlot (black) paintings of Ignatz Preissler have been replicated by every generation of painters for 200 years. Even so, Friedrich Egermann–one of the foremost glass innovators of his time–produced painted glass in the style of his predecessors Kothgasser and Mohn, who decorated glass in Vienna. This form of art glass has been in continuous production since the early 1830s.īohemian glass made between 17 can compete favorably with the glass industry of any country. Another example of classic Bohemian glass technology is overlay glass, cut to reveal the underlying color(s). Nor has the white, high enamel technique depicting human, animal and floral motifs (painters call this high enamel "plastic"). ![]() Some of the Egermann-style, red-stained engraved glass has changed very little in the past 100 or more years. Art glass galleries also include products designed by top glass artists but produced in smaller glass houses, such as that of Beranek or Ajeto.Ĭzech glass companies keep glass products in production for many years. If you visit any large showroom in the Czech Republic today, you will find designs by such avant-garde artists as Vladimir Klein (Crystalex), Erika Houserova and JíYí Suhajek (Moser), and Paval Hlava (Egermann Company). Research facilities constantly produce new formulas and techniques for the entire spectrum of the glass industry: industrial, laboratory, architectural and hollow glass. Glass school students are well grounded in 18 th and 19 th century techniques, as well as those that are the most advanced. We have said many times that the Bohemian glass industry keeps one eye on the past and one eye on the future. ![]() As Ronald Reagan used to say: "Trust, but verify." But an uninformed or dishonest seller can pass replicas off as vintage. We use the term "replica" to describe glass that is a copy of an older design, with no intent to deceive the buyer–usually there is some small difference between them. As a grownup, I don’t receive sebae-don, but seollal is still exciting. For kids, seollal is exciting because they do sebae (a deep bowing on the floor for elders to show respect), and get to receive money (called sebae-don) in return along with good wishes for the new year. John Schu, you should have asked me why I love seollal. It’s a common custom in Korea that siblings share one syllable in the name, so the little brother’s name became Miro. In the end, I realized that one of my friends’ name, Mina, would be a perfect match for the little girl. I had several other names I called her by throughout many rounds of drafts. It took me a long time to decide on her name. ![]() She’s also implied to be the same girl who appears at the end of my debut picture book Cat on the Bus. Mina is a little girl character who’s been showing up in my illustration works for many years and I’m so happy that I finally got to give her a proper story of her own. I had a lot of fun drawing them for this book. It is so beautiful and well-crafted, that they seem like a piece of art. For a fun comparison, I also included my older sister’s one-year birthday photo in which she’s smiling in her beautiful hanbok! Now, as a grown-up, I love hanbok. My one-year birthday photo in which I’m happy again holding a blue rubber ball in an old sweater is included in the book as an author photo. It felt itchy! I cried so much when my parents tried to dress me in hanbok for the one-year birthday photoshoot that they had to give up and put me back in a sweater. As a kid, I didn’t like wearing one like Miro, Mina’s younger brother. Simply put, it’s a lucky bag! I included a direction on how to fold a paper bokjumoni at the beginning of the book. “Bok” means luck and good fortune which includes every aspect of life, and “jumoni” means a pocket/pouch. Please finish the following sentence starters:īokjumoni i s a colorful, decorative pouch that can be tied to the hanbok to carry money or small items. I jumped on the chance, and by the fall, I had the first draft of the story inspired by the families I met who went into kids’ schools to share their Seollal cultures. Then, in 2020, Joy Peskin, the editor at FSG saw the image I created for Lunar New Year and asked if I wanted to make a story about Seollal. I thought it was a great idea, but didn’t feel that I had the right story in me. One of the readers I connected with in 2018 asked me if I could write a story about Seollal as there were not many books about it. Lunar New Year is celebrated by a lot of Asian countries but many people in western countries know it as Chinese New Year. I was especially impressed that many families went to the kids’ schools to share the traditions of Seollal. It was inspiring to talk with them and see many of them share their Korean cultures with others. ![]() Schu, it’s so wonderful to be back! Since I started making stories about Yoomi and her Korean family in the books including Sunday Funday in Koreatown, and No Kimchi for Me!, many Korean American families have reached out to me. ![]() ![]() Bunions are more of a muscle issue caused by wearing tight shoes that are too small in the toe box.
